Performance Notes

This composition stars your top three trombone players fronting the band in a rollicking piece that both players and listeners will enjoy.

While it’s not too technically difficult, each soloist will need to put in the time to get the precision needed to work together as a team. Glissandos need to be played together and in precise time for the best performance. And drag out the final glissando.

Ultimately, it should be FUN! Being a trombonist myself, I realize no conductor wants to leave any trombonists sitting idle during a piece. It invites trouble. Therefore, feel free to assign any remaining players to any of the other parts that you feel are appropriate.

Or don’t and take your chances! I hope you enjoy performing this piece.

Program Notes

This piece was written as an homage to the great Henry Fillmore. Mr. Fillmore is famous for his circus music and, especially, for his trombone trio pieces such as Lassus Trombone. It literally poured out of me and I can honestly say that it was as much fun to compose as it is to play.

It was first performed by the Conejo Concert Band on July 4, 1984, in Thousand Oaks, CA.

It is dedicated to my music professor at California Lutheran College (now University), Elmer Ramsey.

Elmer was a fantastic trumpet player, composer, and conductor who shared his knowledge freely and was always encouraging with my arranging and composing work. He was more than a teacher. He was a mentor and a friend. While he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in this piece. I think of him every time I hear it. Thank you, Elmer.
